TEATRO OLIMPICO
Extraordinary theater in Vicenza, the first covered theater in Europe.
This extraordinary theater, begun in 1580 by Palladio and completed by his student Vincenzo Scamozzi, was the first covered theater in Europe. It quickly became the model of theater par excellence and influenced many European architects. It was classical in style, but the opposite of the typical court theater of the late 16th century. Built in wood and stucco, it embodies an interpretation of the ancient theater, according to the canons of classical humanism. Commissioned by the Accademia Olimpica, a circle of intellectuals and notables of Vicenza, the theater was incorporated into a pre-existing building, the ancient castle of the Carrara family, whose facade, covered with ivy, gives it a romantic look. The stone entrance, decorated with martial engravings, opens onto a pleasant courtyard-garden. Don't hesitate to stroll through it, to admire the astonishing ancient vestiges, statues and capitals carved in the stone. The theater is divided into four parts, following the ancient Roman models: the cavea (or orchestra), the proscenium, theagora and the fixed stage. The latter opens with a large triumphal arch, preceded by a proscenium with painted motifs imitating arcades, as well as columns and marble statues representing the members of the Academy who financed the construction of the theater. The stage reproduces, in trompe l'oeil, the imaginary perspective of the seven streets of the city of Thebes. Look up to the sky to admire the superb painted ceiling and its clouds decor! The theater can accommodate 800 people.
