MUSEO CIVICO - PALAZZO CHIERICATI
Palace with an imposing facade decorated with frescoes and stuccos with a museum exhibiting a collection of sculptures and works of art.
Palace. Built for Girolamo Chiericati in 1550, it is one of Andrea Palladio's most accomplished architectures. Its imposing facade with a double gallery of columns surmounted by statues opens onto the piazza. Purchased by the City of Vicenza in 1839 from the Chiericati family, the complex is composed of the main Palladian building as well as extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Decorated with frescoes and stuccos, it now houses an important collection of works of art, owned by the municipality. In the basement, excavations have revealed the cellars and the ancient kitchens of the 14th and 15th centuries. One can still see a fireplace, a well and the curious gently sloping stairs used at the time to roll the heavy wine barrels easily into the cellars, without having to transport them.
Museum. It houses a fine collection of works of art, including sculptures, paintings and artifacts from the 13th to the 17th century. On the floors, among the major works on display are The Miracle of St. Augustine by Tintoretto, The Three Ages of Man by Van Dyck, a masterful Crucifixion by Memling, but above all this spectacular reconstruction of an entire church, that of San Bartolomeo, destroyed and entirely reproposed here with its pictorial decoration. On the top floor, a legacy of more recent works (Manet, Picasso and Giacometti, among others) is displayed in three nicely decorated rooms.
