It is considered one of the oldest carnivals with its famous Papa de Gnoco mask.
It is considered one of the oldest carnivals. Several stories tell of its origin, we don't really know which one is the right one. One of the legends tells that after Tommaso da Vico's death in 1531, he left in his will a large amount of money to offer wine, bread, butter, cheese and flour to the inhabitants of the San Zeno neighbourhood every year. Although a multitude of masks are present during Italian carnivals, some are more important than others in Verona, such as that of Papa de Gnoco.
