In the summer, the Arena in Verona becomes the setting for the largest open-air opera theatre in Europe. Plays such as Aida or Romeo and Juliet take on a particularly spectacular allure. The idea of transforming the amphitheatre into a theatre stage dates back to 1913, the anniversary of Verdi's birth, in whose honour the first Aida was performed. In addition to operas, the programme also regularly includes concerts and ballets such as Rossini's Stabat Mater and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
