CHIESA DI SANTO STEFANO
Church near Ponte Pietra with works by 17th century Veronese artists.
Located near the Ponte Pietra, this church is one of the oldest in the city. It was built in the 6th century on the site where once stood a temple dedicated to the deities of Alexandria in Egypt. The four columns supporting the vault of the crypt are a testimony to its pagan past. Its Romanesque façade was added in the 10th century. The two side baroque chapels date from 1620; the most interesting is the one on the right, dedicated to the Christian martyrs. Decorated with stuccoes, it contains works by Veronese artists of the 17th century.
