CHIESA DI SANT'ANASTASIA
Great gothic church with 3 naves and many remarkable works.
The basilica is the most remarkable Gothic monument in Verona. The Dominican friars began building it in 1290 and it was rebuilt in 1481 with a double portal and a high terracotta bell tower. The three-aisle interior, with twelve imposing marble columns, is grandiose. The painted and flowered vault is of a rare elegance. Five richly decorated chapels open onto the transept. Among the many remarkable works: the fresco by Altichiero (in the Cavalli Chapel), the Fregoso altar (around 1560) by Michele Sanmicheli and, in the Pellegrini Chapel, terracottas depicting the life of Jesus by Michele da Firenze. The famous fresco by Pisanello, St. George frees the princess from the dragon (1433-1438), which is the most beautiful expression of Veronese Gothic, cannot be forgotten. The two fonts at the entrance are called the Gobbi, because of the two statues of hunchbacks that support them. They represent the efforts made for the construction of the building. Touching their humps would bring good luck.
On leaving the basilica, don't miss the small Gothic church of San Giorgetto dei Domenicani, built in 1283, on your right. It houses an amazing 15th century fresco by Giovanni Maria Falconetto: The Hunt for the Unicorn, known as the Annunciation. A fantastic animal of great beauty, the unicorn was associated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with the virginity and purity of the Virgin Mary.
