SCALIGER ARCH
Ancient cemetery of the church of Santa Maria Antica, transformed into a family mausoleum by the Scaligeri family in Verona
In the 14th century, the Scaligeri family, lords of Verona, transformed the ancient cemetery of the church of Santa Maria Antica (12th century) into a family mausoleum. Their elegant Gothic funerary monuments are decorated with the family's feats of arms and bear the equestrian statues of its most important representatives, including Cangrande I (great dog), Mastino II (guard dog), Cansignorio I (noble dog). The ladder, emblem of the family (la scala), comes back several times on the bas-reliefs and on the gate that surrounds this curious urban cemetery.
