PIAZZA DELLE ERBE
The most beautiful square of Verona, center of the economic and political life of the city.
It is the most beautiful and lively square in the city. The center of Verona's economic and political life through the centuries, it occupies the ancient perimeter of the Roman Forum. A colorful market has always been held here, making the architectural setting of the 14th century houses and Renaissance palaces even more picturesque. Arriving from via Mazzini, you will notice on the left some tall and dark buildings: it is the former Jewish ghetto. At the end of the square is the imposing Palazzo Maffei (1668), with a balustrade decorated with statues, on the left of which stands the square brick tower of Gardello, built in 1370 by the Scaligeri. The northeast side of the square begins with the Casa Mazzanti, decorated with beautiful sixteenth-century frescoes depicting mythological themes. Its highest floors belonged to the Scaligeri who used them as a grain storehouse. In the center of the square stands the Colonna del Mercato, also known as the Berlina (pillory), because in the past prisoners were tied to it and stoned with fruit. Underneath it sat the podestà (representatives of the Venetian authority) during their investiture ceremony. Then you can see the fountain of the Madonna Verona (1368). The statue that adorns this fountain is a 4th century Roman sculpture that the Scaligeri had "disguised" as a Madonna for reasons of modesty. Finally, further on, the Colonna di San Marco, symbol of the Venetian domination, was erected in 1524
