PIETRA BRIDGE
The oldest bridge in Verona, the arches and pillars near the left bank remain from the original construction.
The Ponte Pietra, which spans the Adige to the northeast of Verona, links the left bank to the Roman Theatre and is the city's oldest bridge. Built in 89 B.C. of Valpolicella marble, today it preserves two original arches and two pillars, the only remains of the ancient edifice. Weakened by the centuries, it suffered severe damage during the Second World War, when the Nazis bombed it in 1945. Between 1957 and 1959, it was rebuilt using materials recovered from the Adige, regaining some of its former grandeur.
