MUSEO DI CASTELVECCHIO
A museum of 29 rooms offering a beautiful panorama of Veronese painting from the 12th to the 16th century.
This imposing brick building, built between 1354 and 1357 by Cangrande II della Scala on pre-existing fortifications, was the residence of the lords of Verona. It served as a defensive fortress in case of attacks and as a surveillance point for the Ponte Scaligero, a strategic bridge leading to the Tyrol. In 1928 it became the seat of the museum of Castelvecchio. In 1943 it hosted the first assembly of the short-lived Republic of Salò. In 1944 the famous Processo di Verona took place, a trial that condemned the former fascist leaders to death. Partially destroyed during the Second World War and restored in 1958 by the architect Carlo Scarpa, Castelvecchio now houses a museum with 29 rooms offering a beautiful panorama of Veronese painting from the 12th to the 16th century. Pisanello(Madonna della Quaglia, 1420) and Veronese(Deposition of the Cross, 1548) are obviously well represented, along with their Venetian colleagues, from Tintoretto(The Adoration of the Magi, 1550) to Bellini(San Gerolamo nel Deserto, 1470), via Tiepolo(History of the Maccabees, 1725), Canaletto and Guardi. A collection of ancient weapons and armor, jewelry and sculptures complete the collections, including the sword of Cangrande della Scala, lord of Verona. Curiosity among miscellaneous facts, in 2015 the museum was the object of a theft: six paintings of great masters were stolen without too much difficulty. Fortunately they have now been found in Moldavia, but it seems that the museum's janitor played a role in the theft..
