One of the symbols of the Icelandic capital, the famous Hallgrimskirkja, built at the top of a hill that serves as a pedestal

The famous Hallgrimskirkja is one of the symbols of the Icelandic capital. It is an ideal landmark, built on top of a hill that serves as a pedestal. It was named after Hallgrím Pétursson, the greatest Icelandic writer of the 17th century, famous for his Passion Psalms. Construction began in 1945 after the war, but was not completed until 1974 (with the exception of the nave, which was completed in 1986). The building is inspired by the beautiful geometry of the natural basaltic organs, common in the volcanic lands of Iceland. The whiteness of the concrete recalls the country's glaciers and snow, so dear to the land of ice. Its purity and originality give it a very special character. The interior could not be more sober and bare. Only the organs are not white. It is even possible to climb to the top of the bell tower to have a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding countryside.

From its foot, you can then head towards the seaside promenade or towards the shopping streets. If you're feeling hungry, don't hesitate to stop at Café Loki, one of our favourite addresses in the capital. Opt for one of their plates and their famous delicious home-made ice cream.

Good to know: at night, the stained glass window above the entrance door lights up, giving the place an even more mysterious air. For another view of the church, take the small path behind it that leads to Barónsstígur.
