GOVERNMENT HOUSE (STJÓRNARRAÐIÐ)
Slightly elevated building, built in 1771 as a prison and now housing the Prime Minister's office
Located between Bankastræti and Hverfisgata, this modest, slightly elevated building overlooks Lækjargata. Built in 1771 as a prison (a function it kept until 1816), it now houses the Prime Minister's office. On the other side of Hverfisgata, at the top of the hill, stands the proud statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, the island's first permanent inhabitant. From the benches around it, frequented by locals, there is a beautiful view of the harbour.
