PARLIAMENT (ALÞING)
Building of gray basalt, heavy and massive, the work of a Danish architect, Ferdinand Meldahl
On Austurvöllur Square, this grey basalt building is the Icelandic Parliament, which dates back to 1881. It replaces the first parliament which was located in Þingvellir since 930, and which was thus the first in the world. Heavy and massive building, it is the work of a Danish architect, Ferdinand Meldahl. The current version was reworked until 2002. It is in front of the parliament where the demonstrators gather when protests take place in the city and it is also a beautiful place emblematic of the Icelandic memory to be photographed.
