AUSTURVÖLLUR
The largest square in the old town with the statue of Jon Sigurosson in the center in Reykjavik
Although it is the largest square in the old town, it used to be even larger, as farmers from the surrounding areas would stay here for a market. Surrounded by important local institutions (Dómkirkja Cathedral, Alþingi - the Parliament), it has played a political role for many decades. The Borg Hotel (1930) and the cathedral, which is surprisingly modest in size, are also located here. In the centre of the square stands the statue of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of the struggle for independence in the 19th century.
