OLD CITY
Small wooden houses surrounded by a garden, with corrugated iron roof in Reykjavik
The streets with the oldest houses in the capital are on either side of Lake Tjörnin. From 1883, whaling brought a new style of housing: the first houses with corrugated iron roofs were imported from Norway. Today, these small wooden houses surrounded by a garden are generally divided into apartments. Closer to the harbour is the central Ingolfstorg square with Fálkahúsið ("Falconry"), a reconstruction of the original falconry used to guard the birds of prey of foreign kings.
