BESSASTAÐIR
Residence consisting of a large white farmhouse, a manor house and a church in Alftanes
This complex of gleaming white buildings is Bessastaðir, the presidential residence, consisting of a large white farmhouse, a manor house and a church, from which there is an extraordinary view of the capital. After independence, the Icelandic state took possession of the residence to house its presidents. The residence is surrounded by a beautiful nature reserve and the vast Bessastaðatjörn pond, a popular spot for migratory birds. Good to know: you can approach the exterior of the site to admire the whole, but only the church can be visited.
