STÖNG
A historic Stong site, from a Viking farm, with a thick layer of volcanic ash and lava, with excavations
The historic site of Stöng is a 12th century Viking farmhouse that was buried in 1104 by the catastrophic eruption of Hekla. Indeed, from the time of Iceland's colonization, wealthy farmers prospered here until the entire valley was buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash and lava. All the farms of the time (about 20 have been found) were subsequently abandoned. The remains of the Stöng longhouse, excavated in 1939, are still visible. A nice detour to make!
