BÚRFELLSVIRKJUN
A hydroelectric plant, one of the largest hydroelectric plants, with a decorated facade, with a farm next to it
Here, next to Mount Búrfell (669 m above sea level), you'll find one of Iceland's largest hydroelectric plants, built inside the mountain. The plant's façade is decorated by sculptor Sigurjón Ólafsson (1908-1982), a native of Eyrarbakki on Iceland's south coast. In Búrfell, also not far from the original site, stands a Þjóðveldisbær farmhouse built in medieval style to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the arrival of the first settlers in Iceland in 1974. The Hjálparfoss waterfall lies opposite the power station.
