ELDGJÁ
A large fault of several kilometers in length, oriented southwest, northeast
Eldgjá, the "fire fault", brings the Mid-Atlantic Rift into the open. This great eroded fault, 40 km long, is oriented south-west/north-east. The northern part is the bed of the Nyrdri-Ofæra river, which rushes down from the western lip, giving rise to the double Ofærufoss waterfall. The lowest part of the waterfall used to be spanned by a natural lava bridge, but this collapsed in June 1993. Nevertheless, access to the waterfall is difficult, requiring several hours' 4x4 driving and numerous fords.
