ÞÓRSMÖRK
The valley framed by the foothills of three ice caps, with a steep cliff, dominating the coastal strip.
The track to Þórsmörk is very difficult to navigate, with numerous fords in the alluvial sand plain at the mouth of the Markarfljót. Make sure you have the right vehicle!
The valley is framed by the foothills of three ice caps: Myrdalsjökull to the east, Eyjafjallajökull to the south, and the smaller Tindfjallajökull to the north. Here, the Eyjafjöll volcano, which has reawakened after a 200-year slumber, ends in a sheer cliff. From here, the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall rises so high that it turns to foam. On the seaward side, beyond a vast expanse of black sand, the outline of the Vestmannaeyjar islands can be seen in the distance.
The shortest and most popular hike is to Tindfjöll. Ask the ranger about the itinerary, but be aware that it will take you between 4h30 and 6h, depending on your starting point (Langidalur or Húsadalur).
If you have time, try climbing Mount Valahnúkur (458 m), which is not too strenuous and offers 360° panoramic views of Þórsmörk, the Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers and the Krossa and Markarfjót rivers. Allow around 2 hours. At the bottom of the valley lies Þórsmörk, the "forest of Þór", the famous warrior god of Norse mythology. At the time of colonization, Iceland was covered in forests from the coast to the mountains. Here, from Goðaland onwards, the "land of the gods" rises like birch trees. A true splendor that will leave you with lasting memories.
