The surroundings of Thakgil are spectacular: canyons, virile mosses, glacial tongues, waterfalls, rushing streams... The site was the setting for several scenes in Game of Thrones and is also a popular place for hikers. Several circuits (from 12.5 to 17 km) start from the campsite. Sturdy walking shoes are required as some of the paths are steep and gravelly. The trail is accessible to passenger vehicles along trail 214, which is reached 6 km east of Vík via route 1.
