A rock of several meters high, between sand and ocean, looking like a deserted island in an ocean of black sand
Stranded on the uncertain boundary between sand and ocean, this 110 m high rock looks like a deserted island in an ocean of black sand. In the 14th century, the sea was still rising up to here, but the coastline was then beginning to be pushed forward by all the alluvium deposited by the gigantic floods caused by the subglacial eruptions of the Katla volcano. Today, Hjörleifshöfdi is a peaceful sanctuary for countless seabirds: guillemots, fulmar petrels, great skuas... There are also caves on the southern side of this promontory.
