LAKI CRATERS (LAKAGÍGAR)
The magnificent craters of Laki with a monstrous scar, some forming lagoons, others covered with mosses
In Vatnajökull stands a row of 135 craters, a monstrous 25 km-long scar running south-west and north-east. This is the site of one of Iceland's deadliest eruptions. The famous eruption of 1783 had serious consequences: not only did it bring about major changes to the landscape of southern Iceland, but it also caused famine due to the disappearance of livestock: 80% of sheep, 75% of horses and 50% of cows died of toxic gas poisoning. Epidemics followed. The eruption indirectly led to the death of a quarter of Iceland's population. It is estimated that the ash cloud created by the eruption was responsible for crop failures in France, and one of the causes of the 1789 Revolution! Inside the site, a track runs along the eastern side of the range. A path climbs to the summit of Laki (818 m), from where the site can be seen. The craters themselves are magnificent; some form lagoons, others are carpeted with moss.
As this is a protected site, camping is forbidden. Those wishing to stay longer than a day will need a certain amount of autonomy to enable them to camp outside the site. Please note the fragility of the moss, and the importance of following the trails and not stepping on them. Motorized travellers are advised to check the rules of the road before entering the area.
