This lava coast offers a view of the Mýrdalsjökull and Kötlujökull glaciers. In the past, Laufskálar farm was located here, the first farm in the country to be mentioned in historical sources. It is said to have had 24 hinged doors. It disappeared during an eruption of the Katla in 894. According to custom, every traveller who passes through here for the first time must erect a cairn to ensure that the rest of his journey is favourable: it's up to you!
