MELRAKKASLETTA PLAIN
The plain Melrakkasletta, literally «the polar fox plain» on the peninsula north of Þórshöfn, is the only place in Iceland that touches the polar circle (except the island of Grímsey off Akureyri). This coastline consists of many small peninsulas, one of which, the Rifstangi, is only the northern end of the island. The 870 track separating the ocean from the coastal ponds makes it possible to discover this unknown portion of Icelandic territory. Here, white sandy beaches, bays with basket, boulders covered with kelp, floodwood and bird clouds (loons, swans, geese, eiders…) make up a stretch of coastline very different from the others. Under the shaving light of a sunny summer end, the show is worth a visit. To discover these places, you can stay in Raufarhöfn, a city of the «world end» that will delight lovers of authenticity within 10 km of the polar circle. In addition to its harbor, it has some basic accommodation possibilities, including a rudimentary campsite and guesthouses, a bar, a grocery store, a petrol station, a swimming pool and a bank.
