After Grímsstaðir, road number 1 runs along large volcanic cones. The sides of the cones are decorated with the whole range of earth tones: from pale grey through anthracite to obsidian black, from chocolate brown through all shades of ochre and terracotta, and from greenish yellow to sulphurous yellow.
In this mineral desert that is the central plateau, volcanic peaks of a harder rock than the others, having better resisted to erosion, appear in some places.
