BIRD SANCTUARY
Go there and contact
Iceland, halfway between Europe and America, is located at the crossroads of major migration routes. As a result, different bird species from both continents reproduce there in large numbers. The Mývatn Lake itself is considered the richest site in Europe in ducks. Some 28 species have been observed and 15 species nest there. Among these, the Harlequin Harlequin which only breeds in Iceland and whose main colony is on the Laxá, and Iceland's gardener whose only nest in Europe is Lake Mývatn. The north west shore is a protected nesting area, the ideal place to observe all kinds of birds (more than a hundred species) although it is closed to the public from May 15 to July 20 so as not to disturb our friends.
