STÓRAGJÁ AND GRJÓTAGJÁ
A crack in which a hot spring flows, with potentially harmful algae in Myvatn
In Stóragjá there is a crack in which a hot spring flows. Some people bathe in it, but in recent years the temperature has risen to 70°C before dropping to around 28°C. Potentially harmful algae are also said to be present. We do not recommend a dip. From here, two paths lead to Grjótagjá (another spring in a cave where the temperature rises to 45°C). There are also two roads to this site: one from the east side of Mývatn and the other from road number 1 east of Reykjahlíð.
