DIMMUBORGIR
A sort of natural fortress formed by a veritable labyrinth of ruiniform lava mounds to explore on foot in Myvatn.
From the foot of Hverfjall, a signposted path leads to Dimmuborgir, the "black castles", a sort of natural fortress formed by a veritable labyrinth of ruinous lava mounds. These chaotic heaps are the remains of a frozen lava lake. One of the strangest formations is Kirkjan ("the church"), a huge arch. From Reykjahlíð to Dimmuborgir via Hverfjall, the hike takes 3 to 4 hours. Three signposted trails (15 to 40 minutes' walk) allow you to loop around this protected site.
