CAMPING
Wilderness camping is only permitted on the east bank (which is not part of the park). On the west shore, three campgrounds are located in the park and mark the Hifofoss-Ásbyrgi hike. Take into account that, regardless of your location in the vicinity, shops are rare or even absent, and that it is better to make its provisions in Reykjahlið and Husavík.
In Ásbyrgi, the campground, located at the entrance to the geological site, is well equipped with showers, washing machine, dryer. Open from May 1 to September 30.
At Vesturdalur, halfway through the hiking trail, most walkers finish the first day by planting their tent in this campground. No electricity, basic equipment but superb place. Open from June 7 to September 15.
At Dettifoss, a free campground (reserved for walkers) is not far away from the parking lot, with all the equipment of the rustic toilets and a jerrican of fresh drinking water every day (river water is not safe).
