DETTIFOSS HIKE TO ÁSBYRGI
A large and beautiful hike runs along the west bank of Dettifoss in Ásbyrgi. It usually takes 2 days (30 km) from Dettifoss. It is necessary to have a tent. Don't forget that you can get deposited and picked up by the bus at Dettifoss, Hljóðaklettar and Ásbyrgi, and you can do the same with your luggage.
The trail moves first to the basalt cliff. It then descends to the bottom of the gorges excavated by Dettifoss through a difficult passage, equipped with strings to which we hold. About 1 km downstream of Dettifoss, we arrive in Hafragilsfoss. This violent fall of 27 m in height laid the chimney of a volcano naked. A trail, starting from the Dettifoss road, leads to a point of view on the gorges. From there a second crossed passage goes down to the fall. The marked trail goes back to the top of the cliff. You can avoid the two difficult passages by another marked trail, a little longer, at the top of the cliff by bypassing the Hafragil gorges, old bed of the river, lined with beautiful basalt columns. The Dettifoss-Ásbyrgi hike, with beautiful views of the vertiginous gorges, then comes to the narrow canyon excavated by the falls of Rettarfoss and numerous waterfalls, in front of a basalt fortress with reddish colors. It is impossible to approach the fall itself, and we will see it only from the top of the gorge. However, a marked trail leads to the exit of the canyon, where the cascade of Urriðafossar falls. The hike goes through two trails (one along the Jökulsá, the other its tributary la Holmá) which joins in Hólmarfossar, a beautiful waterfall that runs the green slope of the west bank.
