A place that served as a horse pen, hence the name which means horse castle in Herdubreid
At the start of the trail, you can see the imposing Hrossaborg crater, formed over 7,000 years ago by a hydromagmatic eruption in the same volcanic system as Askja. Its shape was once almost perfectly circular, but successive floods eroded the crater. Before being used as a set for the film Oblivion starring Tom Cruise (2013), the site was used as a horse paddock, hence its name, which means "horse castle". It is only accessible by 4×4 on sunny days.
