At an altitude of 1,682 m, this flat mountain with a volcanic cone at the summit is one of the most beautiful mountains in the country. A signposted trail leads to the foot of Herðubreið and circles it. The ascent requires great care: some passages are difficult; on others, there's a risk of falling rocks. The easiest access is to the west. As always, it is advisable to check the weather forecast, and only set off if the weather is fine and accompanied, and to inform the refuge in advance. It takes about a day to get from the refuge to the summit.
