HOLUHRAUN
Walking on one of the newest floors on the planet, a rather unique experience in Askja
Iceland is shaped by volcanism, which regularly creates new places to visit, like Holuhraun. Fifteen kilometers south of the Dreki hut, a small trail has been laid out on the lava field created by the eruption of Bárðarbunga in 2014-2015. Here, you have the chance to walk on some of the freshest soil on the planet. Access is by 4x4 only, via track 910, which crosses a vast expanse of black sand and skirts the photogenic Lake Dyngjuvatn. Access is easier from Askja (north-east).
