ÖSKJUVATN
Caldera formed during one of its most powerful eruptions, whose interior is occupied by Oskjuvatn, a large crater lake
It was during one of its most powerful eruptions that the Askja caldera was formed, in 1875, during which several meters of snow were covered by the projections. The interior of the caldera is occupied by Öskjuvatn, a large crater lake 6 km long, the deepest in Iceland (up to 200 m). In the middle of summer 1993, the lake was completely frozen, covered by a thick ice pack, which only left room for deep blue water in some places. Here you feel as isolated as you are amazed by Iceland's bubbling nature.
