ASKJA
A volcano in Askja, which last erupted in late 1961
Askja is a 50 km² volcano whose crater has collapsed. The resulting caldera is surrounded by the Dyngjuföll mountains. Askja's last eruption was in late 1961, but its most powerful eruption, responsible for the formation of the caldera, took place in 1875, during which several meters of snow were covered by the projections. The insulating properties of this porous rock preserved the snow, which turned into ice. There is a passage that allows you to enter the caldera. It then takes half an hour to reach the lakes.
