This is one of the sites that remind us why Iceland is such a magical country. Imagine walking across a deserted expanse of black sand (the Sprengisandur) to come face to face with a pool of naturally heated water that seems to have appeared out of nowhere, right next to a refuge where you can spend the night (the Ferðafélag Akureyrar refuge). If you're coming by motorized vehicle, you'll need a 4×4 and information on the weather, as storms can be impressive. Be careful in winter, too, as you may come across pedestrians.
