VIKTUALIENMARKT
Literally translated as "food market", this square next to the Marienplatz has been the city's larder for centuries.
The square was created in 1807, when the Marienplatz became too small to accommodate the farmers' market. In its small stalls, you can find absolutely everything: wine, fruit and vegetables, flowers, honey, cold cuts, pressed fruit juices... In the centre of the square are a few refreshment stands from which you can watch the comings and goings of the market. There are many events throughout the year: the weighing of celebrities, the opening of the asparagus season, the gardeners' day, the women's dance on Shrove Tuesday...
