FEUDAL CASTLE KEEP
The ruins of the Château de Vire keep stand on a granite rock overlooking the river Vire.
The ruins of the keep stand on a granite rock overlooking the river Vire, revealing the only remnant of the feudal castle erected in 1123 by Henry I of England, Duke of Normandy and son of William the Conqueror. Today, all that remains is a facade with flat buttresses and three storeys, typical of Norman square keeps such as those at Falaise and Chambois. They were topped by a machicolated sentry walk. Smart idea: park in the parking lot and continue your walk to the Ecluse and the Musée de Vire.
