VAUX-DE-VIRE
A place to walk between Mount Besnard, the rocky slope of Les Rames, to admire the Castle, and the abandoned houses.
Downstream from the lock, the Vire River meanders between Mount Besnard and the rocky slope of Les Rames (a classified site since 1918), carving out gorges in the rock, called Vaux-de-Vire. Today, it is a valley and a walking spot located at the exit of Vire, below the keep and the Castle square. But it is also, first and foremost, a literary genre born here in the 15th century when the valley was bustling with activity, filled with mills and cafes. A popular Vire tradition, the precursor of vaudeville, of which only a few collections, poems, and drinking songs remain.
