BISHOP'S PALACE

Bishops' palace, a real jewel in the crown of Avranches' heritage, well worth a visit.
This is the former residence of the bishops of Avranches, who lived here until 1790, and is now the court of first instance. It was restored or rebuilt several times: in the 15th century by Louis de Bourbon, and after the fire of 1899 which seriously damaged it. Several Romanesque remains can be seen, including a cross-vaulted room used as a salle des pas perdus, and a granite staircase in an elegant tower. A true jewel in the crown of Avranches' heritage, it's well worth a visit.
