Téremba, named after a small islet in the Bay of Uarai, was a penitentiary with a post office, telegraph and store. Construction of the buildings began in 1871, but following the Kanak revolt in 1878, a fort was erected there to serve as headquarters for the French army. After 1897, the site lost its importance and was sold at auction in 1919. The Marguerite de La Foa Association has been very active in the restoration of the site and participates in the dissemination of a past that has long remained taboo. It is an excellent museum.

Visite très intéressante ! a ne pas rater ... nous n'avons pas pu profiter de toutes les présentations et expositions car nous sommes arrivée trés tard et proche de la fermeture , à l'accueil le personnel a refusé que l'on paye et a retardé un peu la fermeture pour nous laisser tout voir !!!

Un des musées le plus intéressant de la NC! Il retrace bien l'histoire de l'île avec l'arrivée des bagnards.. beaucoup de panneaux à lire, mais chacun étant résumé brièvement, ce musée peut également être accessible aux enfants. La visite des cachots , de la tour et de l'ensemble du fort rend la visite encore plus "réelle", surtout avec le bau paysage qui l'entoure!

Site exceptionnel, avec une vue magnifique sur la mer. Une visite très enrichissante avec des explications retraçant la vie d'autrefois dans cet ancien bagne et qui nous en apprend plus sur l'histoire de la Nouvelle Calédonie. Ce sont les descendants de certains prisionniers qui assurent la vente des billets d'entrée.
