MAIRIE
Pouembout, a commune in New Caledonia, is well known for its penitentiary past. Since 1883, the town has been home to a large penal settlement center. This center was established by a first group of convicts, followed by a second group and 418 other convicts. The presence of a military fort and the Koné administration nearby contributed to the establishment of this center. In 1885, a cooperative society was created to manage local production and improve the lives of the inhabitants. This cooperative helped develop agriculture and attract more visitors to the region. In 1910, Pouembout was granted commune status due to its growing population. Pouembout also offers several tourist sites to visit, such as Château Grimigni, the Pigeonnier, Ouendé waterfall, Pindai provincial park and Franco beach.
