TRAPDOOR SHOP
La Trappe store near the abbey, highly prized for the quality of its products and housing numerous religious objects
Nestled at the foot of the hills surrounding Bricquebec-en-Cotentin, the abbey was founded in 1824 by Abbé Onfroy, who created a beautiful site with several buildings and a fine church. He placed the building under the protection of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. Here, priests observe the Cistercian way of life in the deepest poverty, whatever the season. Today, the Cistercian abbey is open to anyone wishing to enjoy a peaceful retreat. You’re welcomed by the father of the hotel, and the price is left to your own estimation, even if you’re given an average price, which seems normal, to say the least - and rest assured, it’s modest, to say the least, and includes wonderful meals, which you’ll have to eat in silence, however. Our guests include young people revising their courses, those recovering from a minor illness, and those seeking a quiet place to think, rest and sometimes even pray. Trappist monks make their living here by raising cattle, and selling by-products including the famous Bricquebec trappings. And that’s exactly why so many people come here: a store highly prized for the quality of its products (the charcuterie is unrivalled in the Cotentin region, according to the Petit Futé) is just ten meters away. The quality of the welcome is matched only by the enthusiasm of the customers. The shop is sober, and you’ll also find a number of religious objects. A beautiful place of peace and tranquillity that leaves no one indifferent.
