ABBAY OF THE VOTE
Abbaye du Vœu, founded in 1145 by Empress Matilda in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, has become a very popular place for walking.
The story goes that in 1145 Empress Matilda, granddaughter of William the Conqueror, faced a terrible storm at sea. In her prayers, she asked the Virgin for help. She vowed to have a chapel built in exchange for her life. Matilda disembarked at Chantereyne and had the chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Vœu erected. The Second World War unfortunately left terrible traces, destroying a large part of the abbey, which has since been somewhat restored. Today, it is a very popular place for a walk.
