CATHEDRAL LECTURE TOURS
Guided tours in the upper parts of the Cathedral of Coutances, to discover the places which offer an incredible view.
One comes to see this jewel of Gothic architecture of the 13th century for its dizzy towers and the remarkable conservation of the Romanesque parts. The reconstruction of the cathedral destroyed during the Norman invasions was undertaken in 1030 by Robert, bishop of Coutances. In 1048 Geoffroy de Montbray took over the episcopal see and had the grandiose work completed in 1056. When you visit the cathedral, you will find the existing Romanesque vestiges: the towers of the facade embedded in the Gothic towers, the pillars of the nave, under the envelope of the Gothic pillars, the attics of the aisles of the nave, the walls of the Romanesque cathedral. Geoffroy also had the Bishop’s Park landscaped, the only example of a medieval park that remained intact in France. Bishop Hugues de Morville undertook the reconstruction of the cathedral from 1210 onwards: three-level elevation of the central nave, large arcades, tribunes and high windows, the Gothic choir completed around 1238, the lantern tower reaching 41 meters. All these treasures and breathtaking views will be revealed to you by guides certified by the Ministry of Culture during the guided tours. You will have several possibilities of visit here (individual guided tour or with a guide for a group), but we strongly advise you the one with access to the high parts: in addition to the beauty of the places, the sight offered here is absolutely incredible. This jewel, emblem of the city, is one of the symbols of the religious architecture of the department.
