PALATIAL BEAUTY
A legendary hotel where history was made. For a folly. At least have a drink.
It's a legendary hotel, one of the jewels on the lakeshore and the scene of geopolitical negotiations. Opened in 1861, the 5-star establishment was decorated by the finest craftsmen of the Belle Époque. In 1857, at a time when tourism was booming, a local real-estate company bought vast plots of land in Ouchy from the English Allott family to build a large hotel complex. The work was entrusted to Achille de La Harpe and Jean-Baptiste Bartholoni, winners of the architectural competition, and the Beau-Rivage Hotel was inaugurated four years later. Prestigious guests stayed here, including Albert Cohen, who drew inspiration from the Beau-Rivage décor for his novel Belle du Seigneur, as well as Victor Hugo, Camille Saint-Saëns, Charlie Chaplin, Coco Chanel, Gary Cooper, Sacha Guitry, Japan's Emperor Hirohito, Nelson Mandela... It was also in these beautiful marble and red velvet salons that the Treaty of Lausanne (the last treaty of the First World War) was signed in 1923. It established the borders of today's young Turkey after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. In 2015, it was the site of ultra-tensive negotiations between the Iranian authorities and six Western powers on an agreement on the nuclear program, subsequently signed in Vienna.
Today, you can go there to stay in the hotel, but also to dine in one of the many restaurants: gourmet restaurant, luxury brasserie, Japanese or Italian cuisine, with lobby lounge and summer terrace.
