ZAOUIA SIDI M'HAMED-CHERIF
Religious building in Algiers housing a mosque and a tomb revered by women wishing to become mothers.
At the crossroads of rue Sidi M'Hamed Cherif, rue des Frères-Bachara, rue Yacef-Mokrane and rue Fatah Brahim. The religious building houses a mosque and the tomb of the man who died in 1541. He was revered by women who wished to become mothers. The fountain, set into the wall outside the building, is decorated with earthenware tiles. Popular with painter Eugène Fromentin, this spot in the kasbah was for him the "last refuge of Arab life", and is also known as the Fromentin crossroads.
