This mosque was built in 1622 by the Venetian Piccinino-Ali Betchine, a former slave of Turkish privateers who converted to Islam in order to free himself. A renegade, he became chief of the Taïfa des Raïs. After housing the colonial army's pharmacy, the mosque was consecrated to Christian worship in 1843 under the name Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. The original edifice has suffered considerable damage due to its various uses and the deterioration caused by the activity of the nearby souk. A restoration project has been underway since 1988.
