DJAMAÂ EL-KEBIR MOSQUE
Algiers' Grand Mosque is one of the city's oldest. Built in the 11th century by the founder of Tlemcen, it is dedicated to the Malekite rite and is one of the few Almoravid legacies.
Much altered over the centuries, it has lost its original appearance while retaining a certain architectural sobriety. The minaret was added by the Zianid sultan of Tlemcen in 1324. The building has five doors, each giving access to a different part of the mosque. The prayer hall is composed of 11 bays with 72 pillars supporting pointed arches.
